The Rags of Your Love

Dear companion of my days,

To think that I once came to believe it was true that your eyes held a hidden illusion when our gazes first met; that only a few days were enough for me to follow, step by step, the bewitching sway of your hips; that when I felt your lips eager for love, your first kiss gave me the courage to believe in love; that I do not even know how long I will continue revisiting the suns and moons of a time when we believed we were planting love forever, amid the sensations of flesh and heart, when we sealed our bond in a bed where we wove dreams and spoke for the first time about growing old together.

Contrary to what I refused to believe, the moment of our farewell has arrived. After a time in which you turned away from the bribe of my caresses and kisses, I decided to pack my bags, perhaps as you had always wished. You know well that I tried to save our decaying relationship, the one you turned it into when you began to think exclusively of yourself and gave free rein to your pride.

I must admit selfishness proved stronger, because you did not know how to set your priorities, and you let yourself be consumed by commitments that demanded all your time.

Although this is no longer the time to weigh our sorrows or measure our hopes, and although it does not matter whether it rains outside or my heart has become a flood, I believe that, in fairness to all the time we shared, we should make clear how to divide what truly matters between us.

So, I propose the following:

THINGS I AM TAKING WITH ME:

1. The caresses you left upon my skin, your kisses on my body, and the promises of your love, dissolved by the wind.

2. I am taking the memories with me, to thread them into a melody that will absorb all of you, so that I will not forget what that time with you was: a time of complete surrender, happy union, and faith.

3. I am keeping my silent cries of love and desperation, which waited for you to change.

4. I am taking with me the weariness of always loving you.

5. Although I leave with the brightness of my eyes darkened by disappointment, I will not leave you what you might wish for: my shoulders humiliated by heartbreak or my head dishevelled beneath clouds of melancholy.

6. I leave with the disenchantment of our love, which was born on some dawn when the thick taste of cloth dried our mouths and prevented us from saying good morning.

7. I leave with my words cast into the wind, those words that, whenever I spoke to you, allowed you to remain in emptiness, as if you were staring into a grey nothingness that slowly swallowed you.

8. I am taking my sadness because you did not allow our love to become what it should have been.

9. I am taking with me the indifference with which you decided to cook my love over a low flame slowly.

10. I leave with my madness and my obsession with spending my entire life by your side.

11. I leave with my anxieties and with the recognition of all my mistakes.

THINGS YOU CAN KEEP:

1. You may keep the unease that will bind your thoughts after reading this note.

2. Your testimony to the experience of bringing what we had to an end.

3. The dream of your ambitions and their uncertain reality.

4. Since I have no interest in it, keep your impulse, the one you so often carried in your arrogant gaze. Keep as well the contempt reflected in the stern expression you have worn these past weeks…

5. I will leave you my forgetting, which, with the passing days, will become like a cry weighing upon your soul.

6. I leave you the emptiness of our bed while time, if not circumstances, begins to erase the hieroglyphs imprinted on those sheets of passion.

7. Keep the time you never allowed yourself to devote to nurturing our relationship.

8. With all my heart, I leave you the hope made real b00y my departure from your life…

Knowing you as well as I do, you will already have noticed that there are more “things I am taking with me” than “things you can keep.” But think of it this way: in fairness, what I am taking is very little, because you stole my heart.

That is why I am truly leaving with the only thing you really left me: the rags of your love.

Forgive me for failing to mention the point that matters most to you: regarding everything we acquired and shared during our life together, do not worry. That is material. They are only objects. We will talk about that later… Your EX-SLAVE.
