Comic Con Stuttgart: A Pop Culture Celebration of Epic Proportions

Comic-Con Stuttgart, or Comic Con Germany, has become one of Europe’s largest and most dynamic pop culture celebrations. Taking place annually at Messe Stuttgart, the convention unites fans from all walks of life—comic book lovers, movie buffs, video game enthusiasts, anime followers, and many more. Since its founding in 2016, Comic Con Stuttgart has evolved into a must-attend event for fans across Europe, growing in scale, programming, and global reputation each year. Here’s an in-depth look at what makes this convention such a standout on the pop culture calendar.

A Brief History of Comic Conventions

To truly appreciate Comic Con Stuttgart, it’s fun to take a trip down memory lane and see how fan conventions grew into the global celebrations we know today.

The story of comic conventions starts in the United States way back in the 1930s. A small but dedicated group of fans came together to share their love for comic books and science fiction. These early gatherings weren’t flashy but were all about connecting over shared passions.

In 1939, something big happened—the first World Science Fiction Convention, or Worldcon, was held in New York City. While it focused on science fiction, it laid the groundwork for future conventions that would include comics, movies, and so much more. It showed that fans coming together could create something truly special.

Fast forward to 1970, and we get to a game-changer: San Diego Comic-Con.

A group of enthusiasts, including Shel Dorf (was an American comic book enthusiast and the founder of San Diego Comic-Con), Richard Alf (he provided significant financial support and even used his car to help transport people and materials for the first convention), and others, decided to organize a convention that celebrated all things comics.

What started as a small gathering quickly grew into a massive event.

Today, San Diego Comic-Con is a pop culture juggernaut. It’s not just about comics anymore—think celebrity panels, exclusive movie previews, amazing cosplay competitions, and an incredible marketplace. It’s the gold standard for conventions worldwide.

It didn’t take long for Europe to catch the comic convention bug. By the 1980s and 1990s, fan events were popping up across the continent, giving European audiences their own spaces to celebrate everything they loved.

In Germany, fans flocked to events like the Leipzig Book Fair (a hub for literary innovation and a space where fans of various genres) and the Cologne Comic Fair (this fair has traditionally focused on comics as its main attraction, catering to collectors, enthusiasts, and creators). While these events were great, they didn’t cover everything fans were craving. The stage was set for something bigger.

Enter Comic-Con Stuttgart in 2016. Inspired by the success of San Diego Comic-Con and European fan gatherings, Comic Con Germany GmbH created an event that brought together all things pop culture. Comics, anime, movies, TV shows—you name it, it was there.

The first event was a smash hit, drawing over 50,000 fans. With celebrity panels, artist exhibitions, cosplay contests, and more, Comic-Con Stuttgart quickly became a must-attend event for pop culture enthusiasts from across Europe.

Comic-Con Stuttgart has only grown since that incredible first year. It’s become a cornerstone of Germany’s pop culture scene and a place where fans can connect, celebrate creativity, and have an amazing time.

From its humble beginnings to its current status as a cultural phenomenon, Comic Con Stuttgart shows just how powerful fan communities can be. Whether you’re a die-hard comic book reader, a movie buff, or a cosplay enthusiast, there’s something for everyone—and that’s what makes these conventions so magical.

The evolution

Since its launch, Comic Con Stuttgart has grown significantly, both in size and in the variety of its programming. Initially focused on comics and pop culture, the event quickly expanded to include anime, manga, video games, cosplay, and science fiction. Today, it’s a vibrant celebration that attracts fans from all walks of life and caters to diverse interests within the pop culture universe.

The convention’s attendance numbers tell the story of its success. Starting with an impressive 50,000 visitors in its debut year in 2016, it surged to nearly 80,000 attendees by 2019. Such numbers highlight not just its popularity but also its importance as a cultural touchstone for fans across Europe.

Like many major events, Comic Con Stuttgart faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020 and 2021, the convention had to deal with cancellations, postponements, and reduced attendance due to restrictions. But the spirit of the fans remained strong, and the event made a triumphant comeback in 2023, once again attracting 50,000 attendees.

This resilience underscores the enduring appeal of Comic Con Stuttgart and its role in uniting the pop culture community.

Amazing Opportunities

There will be two photo studios at the event. So, you only need to arrive about five minutes before the photo shoot begins. However, please note that not every photo shoot will last a full or half hour, so you must be present at the start of the session.

Once inside the photo room, you will stand next to the actor and look into the camera together. The photo will be taken by a professional photographer. The photo studio has a backdrop and proper lighting, so there’s no need to lean over a table or take a blurry photo with a phone.

Many publishers will be bringing their artists to the convention. This will give people the opportunity to talk with them at the publisher’s booth or even get a drawing made.

For example, PANINI COMICS will be in Hall 4, right next to the Star Wars area, GALACTIC CANTINA!

Flavia Scuderi will showcase her completed Marlene Dietrich biography. In addition, she’ll perform Marlene Dietrich’s songs on the Queer Avenue/Cosplay Kingdom stage in Hall 6! The celebrated Italian Avengers artist Francesco Mortarino will also be there. Mortarino is known especially for his work with Marvel Comics on popular series like *Avengers* and *X-Men*.

This graphic novel is a collection of comic stories that take Batman’s arch-enemy around the world. The German participation was made possible thanks to the words of Torsten Sträter and was brought to life by artist Ingo Römling (also known for his Star Wars work).

Attendees can also see many other artists, such as Benecea, a freelance artist from Northern Germany. At her booth, visitors will find a variety of illustrations of characters that have captivated her. In the past year, she has been particularly interested in *Baldur’s Gate* and *Hazbin Hotel*.

Another artist is Junli, an illustrator from Hamburg. Her work is heavily dominated by botanical motifs, but she has also incorporated animals and is currently working on the twelve zodiac signs.

There is a great opportunity to learn more about Ars Fantasio, the label of independent artist Oliver Wetter. Oliver has ten years of experience as a freelance illustrator for international book publishers and is a part-time lecturer in digital painting. He also writes about digital media and tests digital painting hardware.

His heart belongs to Impressionism; the combination of classical art with pop culture from the genres of comics, anime, and games allows viewers to experience the familiar in a new way. At the fair, he will showcase framed individual pieces as well as new works on canvas.

A major moment for visitors is getting to meet authors Lennox Lethe and S. Bradtke / Ann B. Widow. They write dark books and sign them with blood-red ink.
