For the Way\u00fau, weaving is a way of bestowing life, as experienced by them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The inspiration<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4314\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_01-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4314\" src=\"http:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_01-300x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundaci\u00f3n Hilo Sagrado \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They do so through creativity, intelligence and wisdom. As a result, each handcrafted object included in a Way\u00fau handbag or craft is one of a kind, original and exclusive.<\/p>\n<p>For the community members that weave a thread is a sacred element. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">This is extremely true and special for the Way\u00fau indigenous people.<\/span><\/strong> This is how we enter this story, the story behind the Hilo Sagrado (Sacred Thread) Foundation in Colombia with the <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Uyaraipa community (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.equaltimes.org\/the-indigenous-wayuu-people-at-17896?lang=en#.XYOKJS2B2uU\"><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Way\u00fau indigenous people<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The Hilo Sagrado Foundation was established in January 2013<\/span> <\/strong>by the Italian sociologist, Sabrina Prioli. As a matter of fact, it all began when Prioli moved to Colombia and fell in love with the Way\u00fau culture.<\/p>\n<p>After understanding and getting to know the community, she then decided to create an organization that could provide improvements in their quality life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4315\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4315\" style=\"width: 996px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_02-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4315\" src=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_02-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"996\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_02-1.jpg 996w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_02-1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_02-1-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_02-1-320x193.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundaci\u00f3n Hilo Sagrado \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The idea behind it: not only a great sense of satisfaction, but a sense of belonging. To have a positive impact on someone else\u2019s life as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Only 365 days<\/span><\/strong> after the establishment of this foundation, she worked closely with the sisters, <span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><strong>Ana Maria and Emilia Torres.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On January 2015 Sabrina decided to pass on the management of the Foundation to the Torres sisters. They in return, included a third member to the team of Hilo Sagrado.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4316\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_03-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4316\" src=\"http:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_03-300x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundaci\u00f3n Hilo Sagrado \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work of this foundation is a definite team effort, there are people involved in different countries. However, three women are masterminds behind its success. They are: Natalia Bertel, Ana Mar\u00eda Torres and Emilia Torres.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, there are more women involved in this project as men, this doesn\u2019t mean that men aren\u2019t involved. It\u2019s just that at least in our case we (women) have had this need to help other women who face several difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Hilo Sagrado (Sacred Thread) seeks to rescue the cultural heritage of communities in Latin America. They want to achieve this by empowering women.<\/p>\n<p>This group of empowered women should develop sustainable textile production through the modernization of production facilities and better qualifications. They want to take into account the use of clean technologies, ethical trade promotion, and social welfare.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The problem<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The indigenous and artisanal groups in Latin America have conveyed and collected the ancient techniques and culture through centuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"> Their social implication echoes in our culture.<\/span> <\/strong>However, most indigenous customs are vanishing, as western civilization creeps in.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the hard and time consuming labor of women weaving wonderful, delightful fabrics and textiles filled with traditional embroidery will be ancient history.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_left\">\n<h4>The idea was to continue with the work that she had already developed. When we grasped the situation of the Way\u00fau women, it was clear that we had to continue with this labor.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A perfect example of this situation takes place in the visually striking desert of La Guajira Peninsula which borders Colombia and Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>This slice of land is home to the Way\u00fau people. The Way\u00fau are <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">the largest ethnic group in both Colombia and Venezuela.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are self-governing and skillfully tray to keep the western influence under their control. It is the Way\u00fau themselves and their rich culture that add the color to the Guajira.<\/p>\n<p>The Way\u00fau indigenous people have managed to distance themselves from the rest. They have kept their customs and even their own language, the Wayuunaiki. The women are hardworking, dedicated, wise and disciplined.<\/p>\n<p>Each woven design carries a meaning which extends far beyond its aesthetic beauty. The colors and designs are superb. This means that the Way\u00fau children carry their mother\u2019s last name, making the Way\u00fau women not only the center of the family but cultural leaders as well. Matrilineality is the tracing of descent through the female line.<\/p>\n<p>It may also relate with a societal system in which each person is identified with their mother\u2019s lineage. In other words, a matriline is a line of descent from a female ancestor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The crafts<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_right\">\n<h4>There are many things that we have learned from this community, they have had the best attitude towards improving their life quality.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A traditional Way\u00fau settlement is made up of five or six houses that made up by <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">\u201ccaserios\u201d or \u201crancherias\u201d<\/span><\/strong>. Each rancher\u00eda is named after a plant, animal or place. And, a territory that has many rancherias is named after the mother\u2019s last name given the matriarchal structure of the Way\u00fau culture.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, the problem, as expected, runs even deeper. Projects done by artisans can be understood as a prized form of development for indigenous people.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, traditional handicrafts production requires very few machinery and they mostly use available raw materials. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">This in return encourages local demand and generates employment in other sectors.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_left\">\n<h4>Production is usually done in the home and alongside household activities.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>An important reflection is that for numerous indigenous peoples is that organizing their work in order to be sold is somewhat complicated.<\/p>\n<p>If this organization is achieved, the profits acquired from the sale of handicrafts can be <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">channeled into other activities<\/span><\/strong> that may in return benefit an entire community with other local development programs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4584\" style=\"width: 996px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1604_07-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4584\" src=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1604_07-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"996\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1604_07-1.jpg 996w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1604_07-1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1604_07-1-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1604_07-1-320x193.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundaci\u00f3n Hilo Sagrado \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the most significant aspects of culture that the Way\u00fau women practice is the art of weaving Way\u00fau bags.<\/p>\n<p>But that is not all. It\u2019s no secret, as a matter of fact it\u2019s well known that Latin America and the Caribbean Region preserve a rich cultural and natural heritage. From archeological pre-Hispanic sites, and breathtaking natural sites, amongst others, the basis for further strengthening sustainable development exist.Despite all of this, this development doesn\u2019t take place.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_center\">\n<h4>The community is beautiful, they received us with open arms\u2026 there are many cultural shocks, things that you just don\u2019t imagine\u2026 as a Colombian you think you know about the Way\u00fau culture but in fact you don\u2019t!<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the world economy still struggling to recover from the economic shocks of the past few years, momentum is growing for a new industrial revolution. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">A revolution that is sustainable and inclusive.<\/span><\/strong> This means supporting growth within the constraints of the planet\u2019s limited resources and putting people at the heart of development.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is easier said than done. Central to a sustainable industrial development is the urgent need to tap and cultivate the economic potential of women (half of the world\u2019s population).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><strong>Making things happen<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Hilo Sagrado team strongly believes in giving back to the indigenous Way\u00fau communities. In addition to being Fair Trade, Way\u00fau Tribe <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">is committed to selling only 100% authentic Way\u00fau Bags and art.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But, the work done by the \u201cHilo Sagrado\u201d Foundation surpasses the rescuing of the cultural heritage of communities in Latin America and consequently empowering entrepreneur women.\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The idea is to develop a sustainable textile production.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4318\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4318\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_05-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4318\" src=\"http:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1604_05-300x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundaci\u00f3n Hilo Sagrado \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In order to achieve this, the foundation strives to increase the capability and modernization of the production facilities. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Furthermore, the use of clean technologies, ethical trade promotion, and social welfare is extremely important.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Hilo Sagrado Foundation prides itself in using creative thinking and interdisciplinary methods to construct sustainable development. Together with the communities, they develop projects in order to improve their quality of life and to achieve long term goals.<\/p>\n<p>For them, the work done with women from the community is vital. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">They are after all the motor.<\/span><\/strong> The fact of the matter is that women are, and <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">will continue to be powerful drivers of development.<\/span><\/strong> When men and women are upheld to the same standards (equality), economies develop faster, fewer people remain in poverty, and overall well-being increases.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">A vision of change<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As a matter of fact, Hilo Sagrado has a vision of change. The idea is to have sustainable textile production developed with high ethical standards that allow producing communities to preserve their culture, identity and generate a positive impact on society.<\/p>\n<p>Each Way\u00fau mother teaches her daughter how to weave keeping the tradition as alive and vibrant as ever. To the Way\u00fau, weaving is a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and creativity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_right\">\n<h4>Women are the center of the Way\u00fau culture. They are strong figures, they are respected, they are so important. Men have certain jobs, obviously, but women are the heartbeat of this indigenous people.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Legend has it that, the weaving bag tradition comes from \u201cWale\u00b4ker\u00fc\u201d, a spider that taught the women how to weave their creative drawings into the Way\u00fau bags.<\/p>\n<p>Each design incorporated into <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">every Mochila bag is unique to the weaver<\/span><\/strong>, telling a story through the bag\u2019s colors, patterns and shapes. The weaver takes careful precision in her storytelling, making sure that <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">the Mochila bag is a strong representation of Way\u00fau culture.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first glance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laguajira.gov.co\"><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">the Guajira<\/span><\/strong><\/a> may seem decisively monochrome; everything in shades of desert beige and thorn-tree grey. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Here, the sunsets paint the sea a remarkable blood red.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Way\u00fau women work full days while weaving their Way\u00fau bags and can take up to a full month to complete one single bag. Today, Way\u00fau bags have become a means of financial support for the Way\u00fau people, which enables them to preserve their way of life. Not only that, they tend to have a smaller ecological footprint than men.
