text-align: center;\">But, at the beginning of each year, thousands of tourists arrive and are surprised by a capital that transforms and goes from being a quiet city to a city that is seduced by creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\">As the city of <span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><b id=\"blue\">Pasto<\/b><\/span> is centennial, its carnival also dates <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">from colonial times.<\/span><\/strong> These celebrations, with the fusion and influence of the Spanish culture are what make up what would be the Carnival of Pasto.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The history<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"normalText\">In the early nineteenth century, colonial authorities banned these parties <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">to avoid the indigenous uprisings.<\/span><\/strong> In 1834 the celebrations of Indians with their churumbeles, the mestizos with masquerades and mainly neighbors&#8217; chatter reappear.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\">But in this occasion, <span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><strong>all these parties were framed in the religious calendar.<\/strong><\/span> They did so with the festivities of the Virgen de las Mercedes (September 24) and the Immaculate Conception of Mary (December 8).<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Something new every day<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When everything started, <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">the celebration lasted only two days. <\/span><\/strong>In the 1920s it extended to three full days and today the celebration lasts five days.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\"><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><strong>Every day there is a protagonist.<\/strong><\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">On January 2<\/span><\/strong>, the main characters are the children who learn about the importance of this carnival from an early age. They demonstrate it with their creative capacity in the parade of the <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">&#8216;Carnavalito&#8217;.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\"><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><strong>On January 3rd, the &#8216;Canto a la Tierra&#8217; is performed.<\/strong><\/span> That day 11 choreographic collectives, integrated on average by 250 people, share the Andean strength in their multicolored costumes, their dances and their music.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2926\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2926\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_04-2-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2926\" src=\"http:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_04-2-300x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brenda Cardona \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"normalText\"><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">The 4th is when the &#8216;Casta\u00f1eda Family&#8217;<\/span><\/strong> and the ludic authority of the city, Pericles Carnaval, welcome their own and visitors. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">On the 5th, the game of the negritos takes place.<\/span><\/strong> It remind us of the Afro presence in this mestizo carnival and the 6th when the colors and the majesty of the parade magno give an end to the celebration.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\">During colonial times, on January 5th drum beat was heard in the streets of San Juan de Pasto. <span style=\"color: #1e8b8e;\"><b id=\"blue\">It was the day when black slaves obtained permission from their masters to celebrate, for the only time of the year, their freedom.<\/b><\/span> Then they threw themselves into the roads and remembered their ancestors through music, dance and food, and to express their yearning for equality they smudged, with charcoal, the whites who were in their path.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\">That celebration, which awakened the whole city, was named as the <b id=\"blue\"><span style=\"color: #1e8b8e;\">&#8216;feast of the negritos&#8217;<\/span>,<\/b> and it was such a fuss that on many occasions whites allowed themselves to be contagious, and leaving aside their status they participated.<\/p>\n<p>The world, through Unesco, recognized the qualities of the carnival, when in September 2009 it was included in the representative list of <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2929\" style=\"width: 996px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_07-2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2929\" src=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_07-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"996\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_07-2-1.jpg 996w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_07-2-1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_07-2-1-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_07-2-1-320x193.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brenda Cardona \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"normalText\">To start the year with a new skin is the meaning that the pastusos historically have given to these five days of January. Thus, the Black and White Carnival invites all its attendees to start the year with a clean and renewed spirit, after a real collective catharsis.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">A fusion<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"normalText\">The black and White Carnival has<strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"> its origin in the fusion of multiple cultures and expressions,<\/span><\/strong> corresponding to the Andes, the Amazon and the Pacific culture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\">This fact characterizes and distinguishes it among other similar expressions, starting with the date in which it is made. <strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">It has a distinctly indigenous origin,<\/span><\/strong> since it coincides with the celebration of the Moon (Quilla). All bring to the carnival their inspiration, creativity and ingenuity to make it one of the best in Colombia and perhaps on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">What is means<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is one of the most loved celebration in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\"><strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\">Magic that is reflected in people of all ages and social strata.<\/span> <\/strong>They wear tiny figures on their faces and dressed in multicolored attire, dance through the streets to revive the indigenous spirit under the son sure\u00f1o and the airs of Andean folklore.<\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\">The passion, love and sacrifice for the Carnival of Blacks and Whites were once again framed in a hundred reasons for the happy and colorful farewell of January 6, at the rhythm of the sonsure\u00f1o and in the midst of white powder and serpentines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"eight columns\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2932\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_12-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2932\" src=\"http:\/\/solkes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1901_12-300x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karen Cardona \u00a9 Solkes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Carnival became, from then on, a celebration of communion in which freedom, play, art, creativity, joy and fraternal love of the people of Nari\u00f1o are expressed.<\/p>\n<p>It reflects the need to recreate the historical ritual of<strong><span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"> resisting tedium, sublimate artistic work and dream of another time and space.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"normalText\"><span id=\"dropCap\" class=\"dropcap dropcap2\" style=\"color: #138a8d;\">T<\/span>he carnival is inclusive, accommodates all people, does not need to emulate or compete, but simply complement and contribute from the affection, music, colors and imagination in the different modalities and characters of the parties. <span style=\"color: #138a8d;\"><strong>It promotes the fusion with the others, and in it the street finds its maximum expression.<\/strong><\/span> The days of carnival, the city is transformed and mythical beings emanate in the middle of the ritual that regenerates the meaning of existence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Blacks and Whites&#8217; Carnival s the biggest celebration in the south of Colombia.
